The 94-Degree Reminder: How a Simple Thank You Can Shift the Universe

We’ve all been there: standing in a long line at the post office, shifting from foot to foot, checking our phones, and wishing the clock would move a little faster. On a scorching 94-degree day here in Southern California, that’s exactly where I found myself.

But what started as a routine errand turned into a profound lesson in empathy, divine timing, and the undeniable power of human connection.

A Rare Kind of Patience

As I waited, I found myself watching the postal worker at the counter. She was helping a woman who needed a significant amount of extra assistance. In our fast-paced culture, it’s easy for workers to get frazzled or show a subtle hint of rushing. But this woman? She offered a massive, genuine smile and gave the customer all the time and grace she needed.

Living in Southern California, you encounter plenty of wonderful people, but that level of unflappable patience is a rare gem.

After helping another man in line, it was almost my turn. But out of the corner of her eye, the worker noticed something else—a military serviceman standing at the far counter. He was dressed in his full, long-sleeved khaki green uniform, complete with his hat. In the stifling California heat, he was methodically sifting through a pile of mail, holding a telltale yellow notice.

The postal worker saw it, too.

Before calling me forward, she gently asked if I minded waiting just a moment. I watched as she stepped away to inform the serviceman that he had mail waiting. It turned out to be a certified letter and a couple of packages. She took the time to prioritize him, ensuring a man serving our country was taken care of with the utmost respect.

Words That Carry Weight

When she finally called me up to the counter, I couldn't just hand over my mail and leave. My heart wouldn't let me.

I looked at her and said, "You are the best postal worker I have ever seen in my life."

The reaction was instantaneous. Her face lit up, and a smile spread from ear to ear. She was ecstatic. She told me that she always tries her absolute best, but admitted that some customers don't quite understand or appreciate the effort.

In that moment, I could literally feel her energy shift. I knew, without a doubt, that she was truly blessed by those words. A wave of goosebumps washed across my entire body.

No Such Thing as a Coincidence

Standing there, I realized there was a distinct reason I was in that post office at that exact time.

• There was a reason she needed to hear those specific words of validation on that specific day.
• There was a reason that serviceman deserved the extra care and recognition he received.

Too often, we coast through our daily routines thinking we are just background characters in the world, assuming we don’t have much influence on the people around us. But days like today prove how wrong that assumption is.

Today, I know I touched someone’s heart.

I left the post office feeling deeply blessed—not just because I witnessed good people doing good things, but because I had the awareness and the words to speak up.

Kindness isn't a one-way street. When you pour into someone else, it fills your own cup, too. We have so much power in our words. We can ignore the world around us, or we can choose to see people, validate them, and completely alter the trajectory of their day.
